Method
- Heat olive oil and sauté onion until soft.
- Add beef; cook until browned.
- Stir in salt, pepper, paprika, cinnamon, tomato paste, and broth. Simmer to thicken. Cool slightly.
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Butter a 9×13-inch dish.
- Layer 8–10 sheets of phyllo, brushing each with butter.
- Spread beef filling over the layers.
- Top with remaining phyllo, buttering each sheet. Tuck edges.
- Score into squares or diamonds.
- Whisk milk, egg, salt, and pepper; pour over pastry.
- Bake 35–40 minutes until golden. Rest 10 minutes and serve.
Notes
Add a pinch of nutmeg or allspice for deeper flavor.
Assemble earlier in the day and bake just before serving.
